Abstract:As is known to us all, vocabulary is the first step for English learners in their English study. Vocabulary plays a significant role in English learning process and it is an essential part of the three components (pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar) of English learning. Vocabulary is the cornerstone of English learning; without a certain amount of vocabulary, it is difficult to learn English effectively. In many junior middle schools, it is difficult for students to remember vocabulary clearly and quickly,andit is also a big problem in teachers’ teaching. Therefore, the problem of vocabulary learning becomes the biggest trouble for students to learn English. For that reason, based on the investigation and analysis, this study tries to learn about the current situation of the High School Affiliated to Kaili Universitystudents’ English vocabulary learning strategies in order to guide students to solve the vocabulary problems that they meet in English learning, tochoose the suitable vocabulary strategies, and alsotohelp the teachers improve English teaching efficiency at the same time.

初中生英语词汇学习策略研究

摘要:众所周知, 词汇是英语学习者学习英语的第一步。词汇在英语学习过程中起着重要的作用, 它是英语学习的三部分 (语音、词汇、语法) 中重要组成部分。词汇是英语学习的基石, 没有一定的词汇量, 很难有效地学好英语。在许多初中, 学生很难清晰、快速地记忆词汇, 这也是教师教学中的一个大问题。因此, 词汇学习问题成为学生学习英语的最大的困难。为此, 本研究在调查分析的基础上, 试图了解金沙澳门游戏网址附属中学学生英语词汇学习策略的现状, 目的是为了指导学生解决他们在英语学习中遇到的词汇学习问题, 选择出合适的词汇策略, 同时也可以帮助教师提高英语教学效率。

1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Language is the most important human thinking and communication tool.English as an international language has been highly valued in the world. Almost all juniormiddle schools in China haveregardedEnglish as an important subject. English is one of the compulsory courses,andmost of the Chinese students have takenEnglish as their foreign language since primary school evenfromkindergarten. Both teachers and students in juniormiddleschools consider that vocabulary is the hardest part in theEnglish learning process. Vocabulary is the cornerstone of English learning;without a certain amount of vocabulary, it is difficult to learn English effectively. Vocabulary is so important in English learning that teachers should cultivate different vocabulary learning strategies to help students learnEnglish well. In the actual teaching, thevocabulary teaching methods are monotonous,sothe students are not willing to remember the words. Thevocabularybecomes English learner’s stumbling block. To learn English well, vocabulary is essential; vocabulary is an important part ofEnglish system, so it is also an important content inEnglish learning.

Levelt (1989)indicated that vocabulary is the driving force of language output.A certain amount of vocabulary is the basis for the smooth communication of listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating. Coben (1993)introduced in detail various vocabulary learning strategies in vocabulary learning and their respective advantages and disadvantages.Their research on vocabulary learning strategies focused on vocabulary memorizing strategies, such asKeyword Method,AssociationStrategy,ContextualStrategy, which may be effective for senior learners, but not for junior middle school students, so mostjuniormiddle school students cannot find the right vocabulary learning strategies. The frequency of vocabulary learning strategieswhich areusedby juniormiddle school students is at medium level. It can be concluded that most of them may not form their own ways in learning vocabulary properly. Especially, the students are negative in using some sub-cognitive strategies.

1.2 Significance of the Study

The vocabulary carries the information, maintains the language the pronunciation, the grammar, the discourse,andis thefoundation of the languageskill.Besides, vocabulary has an important influence on students’ reading comprehension, writing ability and speaking ability. In a sense, vocabulary learning is the basis of English language learning, andin orderto learnvocabulary well, vocabulary learning strategies are essential. This study is to help juniormiddle school students find the most suitable vocabulary learning strategies, and to help students improve their vocabulary.With the increase of vocabulary, students’ confidence in language using and presentation abilities isalso improved.This study can alsohelp juniormiddle school students break through the limit of vocabulary to geta larger vocabulary as much as possible, so as to improve the students’ English ability.The significance of this study isto reduce students’ burden of learning English and to improve their vocabulary by studying and summarizingthepositive and effective vocabulary memorizing strategies.

3 Methodology

3.1 Research Subject

The purpose of this study is to understand the current situation ofthe use ofvocabulary learning strategies in junior middle school students, so the second grade students ofthe High School Affiliated to Kaili Universitywereselected as the researchsubjects in this study.Theauthor chose the second grade students as the research subjects withthe following considerations. 3.3 Research Method

3.3.1 Questionnaire

Most researchers use a single research method, such as questionnaire or empirical study to study the students’ learning strategies.This article will use the questionnaire survey method to investigate students’ vocabulary learning strategies.This questionnaire is based on anonymity, and itis divided into five parts,metacognitive strategy, cognitive strategy, resource strategy, memory strategy and flexible strategy.Each settings ofcategory are representative, andconform to middleschool students.Thisquestionnaire amounts to 24 questions.In order to prevent the questionnaire surveyfrom beingrandomly filled in,which mayaffect the data analysis and survey results, all kinds of related items were disrupted and rearranged. Detailed breakdownwas shown in the following table:

This is a closed questionnaire; there are four answersfor each question.OptionArepresentsthatthis vocabulary strategy is never used. OptionB meansthatthis vocabulary strategy is rarely used. OptionC meansthatthis vocabulary strategy is used sometimesandoption D represents that this vocabulary is always used. The higher the choice of D, the better the vocabulary strategy is used. Closed questionnaires have some advantages, because whether the question or the answer is fixed,it isconvenientforstatistics and analysis.
